“If you dream it, you can do it.”

Scene: A ROADSIDE CAFE IN PARIS.

COBB: They say we only use a fraction of our brains’ true potential… but that’s when we’re awake. While we dream, the mind performs wonders.

ARIADNE: Such as?

COBB: How do you imagine a building? You consciously create each aspect, puzzling over it in stages… But sometimes, when your imagination takes flight.

ARIADNE: I’m discovering it.

COBB: Exactly: Genuine inspiration. Cobb leans forward and draws on the paper tablecloth.

COBB: In a dream, your mind continuously does that… Cobb has drawn a circle made of two arrows.

COBB: It creates and perceives a world simultaneously. So well that you don’t feel your brain doing the creating. That’s why we can short-circuit the process…

ARIADNE: How?

COBB: By taking over the creating part. Cobb draws a straight line between the two arrows.

COBB: This is where you come in. You build the world of the dream. We take the subject into that dream and let him fill it with his subconscious.

ARIADNE: But are you trying to fool him into believing the dream is real life?

COBB (nods): While we’re in there, we don’t want him to realize he’s dreaming.

ARIADNE: How could I ever get enough detail to convince him that it’s real?

COBB: Our dreams feel real while we’re in them. It’s only when we wake up that we realize things were strange. Ariadne gestures around them.

ARIADNE: But all the textures of real life – the stone, the fabric, cars, people… your mind can’t create all this.

COBB: It does. Every time you dream. Let me ask you a question: You never remember the beginning of your dreams, do you? You just find yourself in the middle of what’s going on.

Dreams are precious. Walt Disney famously said, “If you dream it, you can do it.” We all have dreams and aspirations, but when we dream, we must dream big! Lofty ideals inspire us, not small goals. Our beloved past president, Shri Abdul Kalam, passionately said, “A dream is not that which you see while sleeping; it is something that does not let you sleep. Dream, dream, dream. Dreams transform into thoughts, and thoughts result in action. You cannot change your future, but you can change your habits, and surely your habits will change your future.” Otorhinolaryngology is one field that provides ample opportunities to dream big!

Abdul Kalam's Quote

“If you spent the same time on something useful, you might win a Nobel Prize!” my wife chastised me. Confused about how to respond or the significance of the scene I had just watched, I awoke. I spend a lot of time researching movies I love. Besides entertainment, each movie should offer ideas or take-home messages. Great directors convey extraordinary messages through good films. “Inception” by Christopher Nolan is one such film. Remember the scene where Paris shreds into pieces following these dialogues!

I watch only a few movies, but I study selected movies multiple times to understand their technical aspects and core messages. “Inception” is one such film that I’ve watched repeatedly. After seeing it, I discovered numerous creative ideas within me. “Seeing is believing.” Visual media is a powerful tool for conveying ideas and information.

“To win a Nobel, first, we need Nobel thoughts, honey,” I tried to justify to my wife, knowing I can’t win an argument with her. Moreover, our spouses are often our best critics!

Dears, with this, I invite you to this week’s “Weekend with a Maestro!” program. We have a great dreamer who has achieved everything they dreamt of as our Maestro. The topic is “Superficial Parotidectomy.” The event is on 6th February 2022, from 06.00 to 08.00 pm – IST (+5.30 GMT).
