It’s been a while since I last wrote a book review. Although I’ve read a good number of books since then, other priorities kept me busy. As we chase our goals and aspirations, it’s crucial to have a steady source of self-motivation to keep us going. For me, non-fiction motivational books are my go-to source for inspiration.
Most self-help, motivational, and business books tend to boil down to about 25 core principles—the same ones that my favorite author, Napoleon Hill, wrote in Think and Grow Rich nearly a century ago. What I love about each new book, however, is the fresh perspective it offers. Every book brings new quotes, stories, examples, and ideas that hit differently. And there’s always at least one life-changing takeaway, no matter how familiar the themes may seem.
Lately, I’ve been diving into Japanese philosophies like Kaizen, Wabi Sabi, Ikigai, and Kintsugi. Recently, I listened to Ganbatte! by Albert Liebermann. This book explores the Japanese philosophy of perseverance and gave me a fresh perspective on the power of persistence and giving your best, whether it’s in small daily tasks or life’s biggest challenges.
Listening to Ganbatte!, I was drawn to the core of Japanese philosophy captured in the word “ganbatte” (gan-ba-tay), meaning “do your best” or “give it your all.” It’s not just about trying harder but adopting a cultural mindset—a philosophy of resilience and perseverance that echoes in the daily lives of the Japanese. Ganbatte! embraces the spirit of moving forward, regardless of setbacks, and Liebermann’s book does an excellent job of breaking down this philosophy into a practical, inspirational guide for anyone seeking to better their life.
The book’s structure, with 50 short chapters, lets readers easily digest each lesson without feeling overwhelmed. Some chapters are deep and reflective, while others are light and playful, offering the right balance of encouragement and practical advice. Liebermann blends Japanese cultural wisdom into everyday situations, making it applicable no matter where you are in life—whether facing professional challenges, personal struggles, or simply looking for a more fulfilling life.
One of the standout features is the “Ganbatte Rules” scattered throughout. These short, actionable steps help readers break through areas in life where they feel stuck. Liebermann writes, “Perseverance isn’t just about big life goals—it’s about pushing through even the smallest of daily tasks with care and commitment.” The simplicity of this message is profound. Liebermann reminds us that by consistently doing our best, we are gradually shaping the life we want, even if the changes aren’t immediately visible.
Key Takeaways from Ganbatte!
Liebermann’s seven key lessons in the book are not just theories but practical insights that can be applied in real life. Each resonated deeply with me, especially as I reflected on my own goals and challenges.
- Embrace Perseverance: At the heart of Ganbatte! is the idea that consistent effort, even in the face of difficulty, leads to success. Liebermann explains, “Ganbatte is not about winning every time but about never giving up, no matter how hard the road.” This perspective empowers readers to shift focus from external outcomes to internal growth.
- Focus on Continuous Improvement (Kaizen): One of my favorite lessons is about Kaizen, or continuous improvement. Liebermann encourages us to embrace small, incremental progress in all areas—career, relationships, or personal growth. “Small improvements, over time, create big changes,” he writes, reminding us to always strive for self-betterment, even in the smallest ways.
- Cultivate Resilience: Resilience is especially relevant in today’s fast-paced world. Liebermann emphasizes that setbacks aren’t failures but opportunities to grow. One quote that stuck with me is, “Resilience is the ability to keep standing, even when the ground beneath you is shaky.” This metaphor perfectly captures the essence of ganbatte.
- Find Purpose in Everyday Tasks: Ganbatte! applies to both big life events and daily routines. Liebermann encourages readers to find meaning in even the smallest tasks. Whether it’s washing dishes or writing emails, approaching these with mindfulness can add purpose and fulfillment.
- Practice Humility: Another important lesson is humility. Liebermann writes, “Humility allows us to learn from others, acknowledge our limitations, and keep striving for improvement.” It’s a reminder that growth often comes from recognising our shortcomings.
- Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Destination: In a world that often priorities instant results, Liebermann’s message to focus on the journey is refreshing. He highlights that true fulfilment lies in the process of striving, learning, and growing.
- Stay Present and Mindful: Finally, Liebermann underscores the importance of mindfulness. He writes, “The present moment is all we truly have. By living fully in the now, we can make the most of every opportunity.” This resonated with me, reminding me to stop worrying about the future or dwelling on the past.
The Power of Ganbatte in My Life
As someone juggling personal and professional commitments, I found Ganbatte! to be deeply motivating. The book aligns with my belief in the power of effort and persistence. The lessons on resilience and continuous improvement are especially relevant as I face upcoming challenges. Liebermann’s practical approach makes the ganbatte philosophy accessible to everyone. His writing is concise, yet filled with wisdom. Every chapter left me inspired and renewed, ready to keep moving forward.
In conclusion, Ganbatte! is an inspiring and practical guide to living a life of perseverance, resilience, and continuous improvement. Albert Liebermann translates the powerful Japanese philosophy into actionable steps that can help anyone become more focused, motivated, and fulfilled. For those looking to face life’s challenges with grace and determination, this book is a must-read.
